Over the course of the year, we are fortunate to visit enough camps, combines, practices and 7-on-7 events to see some of the fast-rising football prospects.

One of the positions that we always keep on the radar screen is quarterback. There is little secret that this is a position that is always under a microscope in South Florida, and for that reason, there has been more of a push to expose these quality prospects.

While the Class of 2013 has some talented quarterbacks, it’s the general thought of those who rate and evaluate the position that the junior class – those in the Class of 2014 – that have started to capture the state, regional and national spotlight.
If you recall, we began talking about this group last year, and have added more prospects as well as break down those who have continued to mature and impress.

As the regular season gets started this week, here is a look at 15 emerging junior quarterbacks in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties to keep an eye on. Keep in mind that things change, and while we will watch every quarterback prospect in South Florida, this is the group that heads into 2012 with the most fanfare:

Peyton Bender, 6-2, 180, Cardinal Gibbons: A huge offseason has propelled this impressive prospect into the spotlight. While he does have some mobility, this is certainly one of those quality pocket passers who’s continued to watch his stock rise. Bender had a very productive spring and summer, which was enhanced by his appearance at offseason passing events.

Kelly Benson, 6-0, 195, Monsignor Pace: After watching and learning lastseason at Chaminade-Madonna, his move down to Miami-Dade County this spring really opened some eyes. Here is a physical quarterback who has very good arm strength and knows how to run the ball and move the chains. Benson is a young man who will battle for the starting job.

Hunter Boyett, 6-2, 200, Westminster Christian: While he has been more than ready to get his chance to step into a starting role for a few years, this is the season that everyone will get a look at one of the more promising quarterbacks around. A strong spring and summer, which included camps and 7-on-7 events has truly made him one to watch.

Alin Edouard, 6-2, 195, Hialeah: Talk about a player who has made some huge strides in the past three months, here is a prospect who jumped onto the radar screen with a very strong spring and summer. His ability to throw the ball and read defenses has pushed him further on the prospect radar screen.

Alonzo Fanakos, 5-10, 175, Gulliver Prep: After spending the past two years at Booker T. Washington, this one-time youth football standout has found a home with the Raiders, and what he did during the summer to manage his new team in 7-on-7 events, he could end up being the perfect fit.

Tyquan Fields, 5-11, 180, Blanche Ely: Lost in the shuffle a year ago, this is an outstanding athlete who had a huge offseason as he made a lasting impression at every event he attended. Fields is a big part of that new regime for the Tigers that is looking for an athletic passer to help add balance to the offense.

Quinton Flowers, 6-0, 190, Jackson: Has more than shown that he is one of the best run/pass prospects in this class nationally. Is capable of putting up nearly 400 yards of offense each game with his strong arm, decision making ability and a knack of using his legs to scramble and create positives. As people watch him play, they will be more and more impressed.

Wade Freebeck, 6-3, 190, Western: After finishing the season as the No. 1 quarterback for the Wildcats, this has been a huge offseason – as he attended several camps and combines, showcasing his many skills. Freebeck already holds a number of offers, heading into his junior year.

Trayon Gray, 6-0, 190, Carol City: Another of those talented football players that many have not discovered yet. While he is a backup to senior Akeem Jones, those who have watched him throw the ball the past year – as well as during his youth days – feel that this going to be one of those very special players who combines arm strength with the ability to move the chains.

Treon Harris, 5-11, 185, Booker T. Washington (Above, right):What more can be said about this quality football talent, who won a national championship as a youth player and followed that up with a state championship appearance as a sophomore. His running skills and ability to make plays is what every college loves about this impressive athlete. Not only can he play quarterback, but this is someone who can play as many as 5 positions on the field. Harris is the youngest son of Tornadoes head coach Tim “Ice” Harris.

Nick Jeanty, 6-2, 185, Miramar:Yet another of those prospects who has parlayed an outstanding youth career into an opportunity to become one of the top rising players in his class. While he is a battle for the starting job, this one-time Archbishop McCarthy standout continues to get bigger and stronger – as he showed during the spring and summer.

Nicodem Pierre, 6-2, 200, Coral Reef: While many junior quarterbacks have been receiving plenty of recognition, here is yet another quality football talent to add to that growing list. Pierre has a huge arm with great vision and understanding of the position. Coaches who have played against him believe he has a chance to be one of the best in the state by the start of his senior year.

Sean Pratt, 5-11, 178, Cooper City: Pratt is getting his first opportunity to lead the Cowboys this season and he gives the defending district champions several options on the offensive side of the ball. He had had an impressive debut in a kickoff classic win against Miami Ferguson – throwing for 4 touchdowns and running for another. Another product of the Ken Mastrole Passing Academy, Pratt holds down a 4.0 GPA.

Brandon Vicens, 5-7, 175, Archbishop McCarthy: Could end up being one of the huge surprises this coming season after coming over from American Heritage, where he played behind Arkansas-bound Tyler Cogswell and rising sophomore standout Torrance Gibson. While he is best known for his play on the baseball field, this is a football player who was voted as one of the best youth quarterbacks in South Florida a few years ago in Doral.

Sean White, 6-2, 200, Chaminade-Madonna (Above, left): This two-year starter has done nothing but improve and receive accolades from just about everyone who has watched him play. He has an unbelievable understanding of the position and how to play it. White is a physical passer who won the MVP at the Miami Nike event as well as being considered as one of the fastest-rising prospects nationally. He’s also one of the top students in his class -- great leadership qualities.
