Lions Outlast Eagles for State Title

The Rock Lions came into the class 1A state final looking to win the first state Girls Basketball Title in the Gainesville area since 1997. The Lions had to wait until the final second of the game to accomplish their goal defeating the Hollywood Christian Eagles 51-48.

Spoto opened the game with the first basket but then it was all downhill after that as St. Petersburg Lakewood’s offense was on cruise control, beating the Spartans 72-37 in the opening round of the 4A girls basketball championship.
Panthers Get Back to Winning Ways

After losing their first game of the year in the district finals to Apopka, the Lady Panthers of Orlando Dr. Phillips was ready to get back on the court and start a new winning streak. It didn’t take them long to start the streak as they easily defeated the Vero Beach Lady Indians 59-34 in the first round of the 6A state playoffs.

Tigers Reloading for A Big Year

After going to the final four in the 2007 season, the Pompano Blanche Ely Lady Tigers entered the 2008 year with high expectations. The Tigers rose to the challenge during the regular season going 22-2 and winning the district title for the second consecutive year. Unfortunately, their dream season came to an end losing in the first round to the eventual state champions South Broward. Now with a younger team and many of the experts counting them out, the Lady Tigers feel they are ready once again to prove the critics wrong.

The Second Annual Fun In The Sun Tournament concluded with a Team Breakdown victory over Hollywood Eagles in the title game. Team Breakdown was led by Sandra Garcia (American Heritage H.S.) with 14 points and Aerial Wilson (Rockledge H.S.) with 11 points to secure a 47-46 win over the Eagles.

Teams such as Hollywood Eagles, Team Essence, and Team Breakdown are considered the main attractors of the tournament, which should make a great basketball weekend.

Led by guard sensation, Bianca Lutley, 5’10” junior, the Tigers were flawless until the final game of the season before losing to Orlando Bishop Moore in the Class 4A State Title game.
