ESPN TO TELEVISE GLADES CENTRAL (FLA.) – BYRNES (S.C.) HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAME LIVE ON AUG. 26

ESPN, in conjunction with Paragon Marketing Group, will televise a match-up featuring two of the nation’s top high school football programs Saturday, August 26 at Noon ET, when James F. Byrnes High School (Duncan, S.C.) hosts Glades Central High School (Belle Glade, Fla.). The game will air live from Nixon Field.

“We are pleased to once again partner with Paragon Marketing Group to share the passion and excitement surrounding high school sports and these two football programs,” said Burke Magnus, vice president and general manager, ESPNU. “This game also gives sports fans a chance to see players they will soon root for at the collegiate level.”

Byrnes finished last season 15-0 and was ranked eighth in the final USA Today Super 25 high school rankings. The Rebels have compiled a record of 57-2 over the last four years and also won the last four South Carolina Class AAAA State Championships. The school enters the 2006 season with a 32-game home winning streak and is led by all-American quarterback Willy Korn (2007), who has verbally committed to Clemson. In his junior season, Willy threw for a state record 4,164 yards and 53 touchdowns. This past season Byrnes team totaled 73 passing touchdowns, which is the third most for a single season in the sport’s history. Byrnes will return nine starters from their 2005 squad, including standout linebacker and leading tackler Stanley Hunter.

“We look forward to representing the State of South Carolina and showcasing our school and community in this nationally televised football game” said Bobby Bentley, Byrnes High School head coach. “It is an honor to compete against a talented opponent such as Glades Central.”

Glades Central has a record of 57-5 over the past five years and was 12-1 in 2005 reaching the Class AAA State-Semi Finals in Florida, while averaging 36 points a game. The school has won five Florida State Championships over its history (’71,’72,’98,’99,’00) and will return 17 starters in 2006. A total of 23 Glades Central alumni have gone on to play in the NFL.

The 2006 squad will be led by a number of top prospects, including wide receivers Deonte Thompson (2007), ranked as the #1 wide receiver in his class by many scouting services, and Tarus McKinley (2007). Last season Thompson accounted for 12 receiving touchdowns and returned six kick-offs for touchdowns, while McKinley caught 10 touchdown passes. Quarterback Bryan Mann, who threw for 2,017 yards and 23 touchdowns last season, returns along with highly regarded offensive linemen Earnest McCoy (2007), Maurice Dynes (2007) and Jetavious Jackson (2007).

"Our football program is honored to represent Palm Beach County and the State of Florida," said Willie Snead, Glades Central High School head coach. “We look forward to bringing “Raider Nation” football to South Carolina.”.

Last year, ESPN, ESPNU and Paragon Marketing Group combined to present three high school football games. A complete high school football schedule will be announced on a later date.
