Coach Jones Has Dr. Phillips Basketball On Another Level

Apr 10, 2013

By: Herb Thomas

Five years ago Anthony Jones switched over from a very successful Dr. Phillips boys program, to take over a mediocre Dr. Phillips girls program and turn them into a National Powerhouse.

Jones was hesitant about the move being that he hadn’t coached girls before, decided to accept the challenge and it has definitely paid off. His first year was a little shaky finishing 12-12. The program really took off after that first season posting a 125-11 record over the last four years including four straight 30+ wins, four straight trips to the state tournament (losing the first time out and winning three straight championships since then and 2 out of 3 National Championships).

Jones has won Coach of the Year once in 2011 for the state of Florida in their class but has never won Coach of the year in his area,  the Metro Conference, despite being 68-8 overall in the Metro and winning 38 straight over his Metro peers and 68 straight wins and counting over all Florida schools period.

The thing about Coach Jones and his squad is that they don’t worry about accolades or what the outsiders think.  All they do is win even if they might feel disrespected. They don’t run from challenges they embrace them, no words are needed because they handle it on the court. Jones has been blessed with great talent but even when you get good or even great talent it still has to be coached to mature it into something great. That is exactly what Jones has done with his program and has done it his way.

People love to say how overrated they are despite what they think numbers never lie. Time to stop hating and appreciate what they have done for our great state they represent us well every time out. Time to Invest in your kids and stop being so selfish and start being selfless. Shout out to Coach Jones, his staff, those parents, fans and most of all those girls who put in all that work to help there program become successful. These ladies showed hard work does pay off. I wish them continued success and again congrats and as the fans would say AWWWWWWW DP!!!
