Florida Prospects Game of the Week

Sep 10, 2010

By: Robert Sumpter

The game of the week takes us to St. Petersburg Florida where the Spartans of Lakewood High School will face St. Petersburg High in a match-up between two of Pinellas County best teams.

Tale of the Tape

Offense

St. Petersburg High comes into the game with one philosophy.  We must run the ball.  Although most teams feel this way, the Green Devils usually back it up.

Their offense starts with quarterback/athlete David Jones.  Jones is a two year starter who led St. Petersburg to an 11-2 record.

St. Petersburg lost most of their rushing yards due to graduation but the coaching staff is expecting a big season from senior Rashad Lewis.  In last week victory against East Lake, he started the season off with a 100 yard performance.

The strength of the Green Devils offense this year will be the play of their offensive line.  They return four starters including Taylon Culbreth and Tyler Sweetland.

Lakewood

Lakewood has made the playoff the last two years and will be looking to do the same this year.  They do lose do it all athlete Bernard Reedy but still have plenty of weapons.

The Spartans will start senior quarterback Alphonso Evans.  Evans is more of an athlete than quarterback won the job in the spring.  In game one against Gibbs, Evans accounted for two touchdowns one in the air and one on the ground.

Lakewood will depend more on the running of senior Byronton Jackson this year.  While playing a limited role a year ago, Jackson has showed he is up to the challenge.  Last week he rushed for 99 yards and a touchdown.

Defense

St. Petersburg will have a revamped defensive line this year with many players to graduation.  Emmanuel Watkins is there most tenured player.

Jamone Myrick and Cody Pogorelc lead a linebacker corps that flies to the ball.  Last year they combine for over 170 tackles and eight forced fumbles.  Also look for Nick Butler to be an impact player.

In the secondary, Javaris Little and Calvin Robinson patrols the skies and provides airtight coverage.

Lakewood

Lakewood’s defense may have the best defensive end combo in the Tampa Bay area in junior Dante Fowler and St. Petersburg Catholic transfer Evan Holmes.  Both ends are quick and fast to the ball and know how to get to the quarterback.

In the secondary, look for All County defensive back Javaris Little to lead a young Spartan Group.

Prediction

St. Petersburg has been one of the best teams in the Pinellas County area over the past two years and this year they may be the best.  Lakewood has come on of late to compete with some of the better teams, but they are not there yet.

Final Score

St. Petersburg High 31 Lakewood 13
