Sep 3, 2010

By: Robert Sumpter

The game of the week takes us to St. Augustine Florida where the Yellow Jackets will face Ocala North Marion in an early season match-up between two of the top teams in the state.

Tale of the Tape

Offense
`
Ocala North Marion comes into the game with high expectations on offense.  Returning many key players, the Colts feel that they have one of the best offenses in the state.

The Colts will be led by talented junior running back Jamie Gilmore.  Last year, Gilmore rushed for 1,695 yards with 18 touchdowns.

When the Colts go to the air, they will be looking for junior wide receiver Latroy Pittman and tight end Sean Price.  Last year, Pittman and Price accounted for 62 receptions for over 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The quarterback situation will be the question mark for the Colts.  The Colts will start Dakota Ketchum who seemed to win the quarterback battle in the spring.

St. Augustine

Offense

The Yellow Jackets has been one of the best teams in the First Coast Area for the last five years.  The Jackets features a potent rushing attack that set up an efficient passing attack.

This year the Jackets return senior Kyle West at quarterback.  West will be a three year starter who has an impressive 23-2 record.

The Jackets must replace All County running back Duane Brady who led the Jackets in rushing with 1,443 yards and was the County Player of the Year.

This year the Jackets will have a three headed rushing attack with Timmy Lewis, Travis Bassa, and Jerry Blount.

The Jackets possess one of the state’s best receiver prospects in Markis Merrill.  The senior wide receiver has multiple offers and led the Jackets in receptions and yards last year.

Defense

North Marion lost many starters from last years defense which help lead the Colts to the third round of the playoffs last year.

This year the Colts will be young but they will be led by senior linebacker Devin Brunt who had 125 tackles last season and two interceptions.

St. Augustine

The Yellow Jackets boasts one of the top defenses in the First Coast Area.  The team is fast and quick to the ball.

Up front the team is led by senior Tarek Odom.  Odom is the reigning state weightlifting champion, controls the front and shuts down the rushing attacks from the opposing teams.

Intangibles

The Yellow Jackets has personally ended the season for North Marion two times since 2005 in the state playoffs and have not lost to the Colts since 1990.

Both teams come in with very high expectations for the 2010 season with the winner of this game getting an early mental advantage to start their season.

Prediction

Although both teams lost their Pre-Season game, both defenses look surprisingly great.  This game comes down to the newer starters on the team.  With North Marion breaking in a new quarterback and St. Augustine finding a replacement for Brady.

Final Score

St. Augustine 31 Ocala North Marion 21
