Ft Myers Runs Their Way to State

St Petersburg – Saturday night’s game between St. Petersburg Lakewood and Ft. Myers Green Wave was built as the top match-up in the Tampa Bay Area.  With both teams vying for a spot in the state’s final four, the game lived up to its billing.

Ft Myers Green Wave set the tone early by two ways. First they were able to move the game out of the Lakewood Spartans home gym and to Eckerd College because the Spartans gym was too small.  The second was when the Green Wave opened the game up with an 8-0 run.

The Green Wave put a full court press that the Spartans struggled to break all night. Ft Myers pressed and double teamed the Spartans all night making it difficult for the Spartans superstars to get into their rhythm. Dominic Lane scored 5 points and LaDarius Barnes had 10 points.  Both seniors were well under their season averages. The Spartans are usually the team that presses and makes teams frustrated but on this night they got a taste of their own medicine.

The Green Waves showed why they were the number one ranked team in 4A with there defense, and sharp shooting from the outside and from the free throw line. Evin Graham scored 25 points 11 of them from the free throw line. Graham who is a junior, played like a superstar.  He made everything happen for the Green Wave.  From making steals to his hot shooting from the outside Graham was the best player on the court.

The Green wave as a team will be hard to beat if they play this way in Lakeland.  Ft Myers will face Rutherford Friday March 5th in the Lakeland Center.
