It took 46 years for Jacksonville Robert E. Lee to return to the state final four and for three and a half quarters it looked as if they would be continuing their Cinderella season as they hung tough against state power St. Petersburg Lakewood in the first semifinal game of the 5A Region. Unfortunately for the Generals, the clock struck midnight on their season as Lakewood defeated Lee 57 to 44.

“We had a tremendous season. No one all year thought we would have been as good as we were. You have to remember that we are a very young team and return all five starters back next year so we will use this experience as a building block for our program.” Coach Jenkins said.

The game was tightly contested throughout as both teams would go on scoring runs throughout the first three quarters.

In the first half, Lakewood senior guard Edward Nixon seemed unstoppable for the Spartans as he accounted for 22 of Lakewood’s 24 points with 14 points and four assists. Nixon would finish the game with 28 points and five assists.

The game wasn’t decided until the fourth quarter when Lakewood went on the game’s final run (12-0) and put the game away.

“At the end of the night, they just had a little bit more than we had. I feel that we fought as hard as we could to win the game and I am proud of our team for our effort tonight. We will be back next year.” Coach Jenkins said.

Lee’s star guard Shaquille Johnson never seemed to get into a rhythm as Lakewood sent a double team his way all night and never allowed him to get fully into the game. Johnson finished with 13 points for the night on 3 of 13 shooting.

St. Petersburg Lakewood advances to play the winner of the Lake Howell/Ft. Lauderdale Dillard game on Friday.
