Mixed Results for Florida Teams Against the Nation

Four of the top 10 teams in the state had a chance to play against some of the top teams from across the nation.

First and foremost let me make this clear.  Palm Beach Dwyer was simply cheated out of their game against Cleveland Glenville.  Not only did Dwyer get in the end zone once during the final minutes of the game, but they got in the end zone three times with the officials blowing the calls each time.  In a game in which Dwyer dominated from beginning to end, a few miscues on special teams and the horrible job of the officials led to their 26-22 defeat.

Special teams doom Miami Central.  The Rockets went to Georgia to play against state power Camden County.  In a high scoring game, Camden County kicked a 23 yard field goal with no time left to defeat the Rockets.  The Rockets gave up two special teams touchdowns one on a blocked punt and another on a 95 yard kickoff return.

Cocoa made a case for one of the best teams in the nation after defeating Pennsylvania Thomas Jefferson 43-7.  The victory marked the Tigers second consecutive victory over an out of state power.  They defeated Mississippi Olive Branch last week.

Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas went to Texas and defeated Dallas Skyline 31-3.  The Raiders limited Skyline to only 132 yards of total offense.  It’s safe to say that Skyline doesn’t like the state of Florida.  Last week they lost to Belle Glades Central 6-0.

Bradenton Manatee followed up an impressive victory over Tampa Plant by going to Pennsylvania and defeating Woodland Hills 39-16.

Statement Games

While Miami Northwestern struggled in their pre-season game against Miami Norland, they left no doubt in their season opener defeating Miami Carol City 40-18 behind senior quarterback Teddy Bridgewater who threw five touchdown passes.

Miami Washington opened the season in style with a 48-0 rout of Miami Killian.  Tornadoes quarterback Jeremiah Hay had three touchdowns.

Orlando Dr. Phillips is seriously looking like a championship contender after defeating Orlando Edgewater 48-7 to open the season.

Rebound Games

Tampa Plant still isn’t hitting on all cylinders, but they rebounded from last week’s embarrassing lost to defeat Tampa Bay Tech 10-0.

Lakeland Kathleen continues to struggle as they lost their opening game to Tampa Jesuit 14-7.

Lakeland showed their strength up front as they rushed for over 300 yards in a 27-14 victory over Venice.

Pahokee rebounded after last weeks lost to Jupiter Christian with a 12 -7 victory over Delray Beach Atlantic.

After a lackluster performance last week, Pensacola showed that they are still the team to beat in 3A with a 24-7 victory over Pensacola Pine Forest.

Teams to watch

Cape Coral Island Coast started the season in good form with a 38-0 victory over North Fort Myers.

Jacksonville First Coast defeated defending state 1A champions American Heritage 26-17.

St. Augustine defeated North Marion 14-6 in a match-up between two of the top teams in the state over the past five years.

Player of the Week

Palm Beach Dwyer Nick O’Leary.  O’Leary was the best player on the field in a match-up between national powers.  The senior caught 9 passes for 152 yards and one touchdown.
