South Florida Guard Next In Line

Jun 1, 2014

At the beginning of last year’s basketball season, Miami Southridge guard Canaan Bartley wasn’t a household name.  He hadn't play as much as a freshman due to the fact that Southridge had one of the better guards in South Florida in Imani Edwards.

After playing a reserve role in his freshman year, Bartley exploded his sophomore season as one of the top playmaking guards in the state.

For the season, Bartley averaged 17.4 points a game with 4.2 assist helping to lead the Spartans to a 21-7 record and helped them returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2006.

Bartley’s head coach, John Herron, knows a little about coaching great point guards down south.  Over the past eight years, he has place several guards in College including Treymayne Russell (FIU), Vincent Williams (University of Georgia) and most recently Imani Edwards Florida State College.

“Bartley is an athletic freak who has all the tools to be really good.  He‘s more of the Russell Westbrook type of point guard.  Fast, explosive, have great handles and fearless who is still young and maturing.”  Coach John Herron said.

This summer, Bartley joins Showtime Ballers organization for travel ball who is is known for placing top guards in high division one colleges.

With Bartley’s skill and drive, he just may be the next guard in line to continue the tradition.
