Winter Haven Back to the Finals

Tampa Sickles knew coming into the game that they had to be careful with the ball and keep the game at a low scoring pace against Winter Haven if they had a chance of winning the 5A semi-final game.   Sickles was able to succeed in keeping the score low but, a season high 27 turnovers  doomed the Gryphons as they lost 50- 42 to Winter Haven.

Tampa Sickles’ Amber Henson the Duke commit did not go down easy, she finished with a game high 20 points 18 rebounds and 7 blocks.

Henson controls the paint but couldn’t get the help she needed to make it to the 5A final.  Sickles Bre Crum finished with 12 points but she had an uncharacteristic 17 turnovers that really hurt the flow of their offense.

Winter Haven Blue Devils won with it signature defensive pressure. Not only did the Blue Devils forced Tampa Sickles into 27 turnovers they also had 17 steals in the game.

The Blue Devils used a balance attack with three players in double figure scoring with Zeneka Willix scoring 12 and Charla Nelson and Erica Lanier leading the Blue Devils with 16.

“Charla Nelson was huge for us tonight.  She didn’t back down to Amber Henson at all even though she gave up three inches to her. “  Winter Haven head coach Johnnie Lawson said.

Now the 5A Final is set with two well known girl power houses in which should be a great match up with the Dillard Panthers and the Winter Haven Blue Devils.
