Playing in front of over 3,000 scream fans, Winter Haven Senior Offensive Lineman Matt Timmons walked off the field with tears of joy streaming down his face as the Blue Devils came back from a 14-0 deficit to defeat top ranked Seffner Armwood 26-25 in overtime in a key district game.

“I’m so proud of our team and our coaches. They kept battling throughout the entire game and didn’t give up or got discourage once we fell behind. Armwood is a great team and for us to win this game shows the character that this teams has.” Winter Haven Head Coach Charlie Tate said.

The game started as if it was going to be a typical night for Armwood. The Hawks took the opening drive of the game and marched 80 yards culminating with a three yard touchdown run by senior Marquise Branton.

After an interception on Winter Haven’s opening possession, Armwood scored on a double pass from Hickman to Mywan Jackson who passed to Deondre Kyles streaking down the sideline for a 25-yard touchdown pass to put the Hawks up 14-0.

The turning point in the game came on Armwood’s third possession when Hickman fumbled a handoff attempt to Branton and the ball was recovered by Blue Devils Linebacker Jake Beacham. On the next play junior running back Q Metelus took a pitch and ran 20 yards for the Blue Devil touchdown.

That score was apart of 19 unanswered points by Winter Haven as they took a 19-14 lead late in the fourth quarter.

Trailing 19-14 with less than three minutes to go in the game, the Hawks was able to force overtime after Winter Haven took an intentional safety and Armwood drove the ball 63 yards to the Winter Haven’s 12 yard line and kicked a 29 yard field goal by Darren de Rochemont with no time remaining to force overtime.

In overtime, Armwood scored on their first play when Branton ran up the middle for a ten yard touchdown. The Hawks however didn’t get to try the extra point as the snap was low and Rochemont was not able to attempt the pat.

On Winter Haven’s overtime possession, Dasmond Williams scored from ten yards out on a fullback dive. Chris Conlon then kicked the extra point and sending the Winter Haven football team to the upset victory.

“This was a game that we looked forwards to all season. They knocked us out of the playoffs last year and we really wanted to beat them tonight. Our team showed great heart all night and hopefully this win will help motivate us for the rest of the season.” Winter Haven’s quarterback D.C. Jefferson said.
