Dante Anderson Team Previews

 

Williston

 

The “Red Devils” are becoming a recognized power in 3A sunshine state hoops.  Last years team logged a 21-8 record advancing into the regional semi-finals.  4 starters return touting an all underclassmen lineup.  A trio of juniors in 6’1” Issac Floyd (10ppg), 6”1” Deonte Welch (13ppg) and 6’1” Kelcey Coleman (7ppg) will lead the way.  6’5” sophomore James Hunt gives the Devils an inside presence.  The “Devils” are recently crowned champions of the Tim Brinkley Memorial Tournament.

 

Gainesville-The Rock School

 

The “Lions” are a 1A state power under Coach Svend Wilbekin who has compiled a 153-97 record over 11 years at the helm.  Two starters return off a 15-7 club but has a solid starting group led by 6’2” sophomore Scottie Wilbekin (14ppg- 6 assists) and 6’5” junior Vlad Kondratyer (8ppg) who signed with Bryant University in Rhode Island.  6’5” junior Ray Velez has vastly improved to help provide depth that is needed.

 

Gainesville Eastside

 

The “Rams” are known for intensity on both sides of the ball under Coach “Pop” Williams. Last years club went 17-10 and return 4 starters. The junior guard combo of 6’2” Dennis Mavin and 5’10” Jerrod Owens are quick as lightning and have been 2 year Varsity starters. 6’3” Junior Caesar Wright is an athletic inside player and newcomer 6’1” Benji Bell fits right. A winning JV team at 12-7 will provide the depth to a potent speedy group.

 

Gainesville

 

The Purple Hurricanes are off to a 11-1 start.  They return many players from last year final four team including FAU commit Greg Gantt.  Junior T.J. Hall is one of the top prospects for the class of 2010.  Senior Forward Anthony Nwadigo and Center Gabe Rutledge bolster the front court of the Hurricanes who has championship aspirations.

 

Hawthorne

 

The Hornets are off to a great start at 9-3 and winners of their past two games.  The Hornets are led by their trio of guards in Edward Ray, Jimmy Johnson, and Anthony James.  Combined the trio average 45 points a game.  

 

Jacksonville Englewood

 

Last year, the Rams used the Dante Anderson event to turn their season around and make the playoff.  The Rams are led in the backcourt by senior guard Darius Robinson.  They are anchored in the frontcourt by junior Admir Sahbegovic who has an offer from Jacksonville University.

 

South Lake

 

The Eagles come into the 2009-2010 season with high hopes for a deep run in the playoffs.  Guards Ray Noel, Matt Chattin and Lamar Laing leads the backcourt and Senior Jarvis Graham bolsters the frontcourt.

 

South Dade

 

The Buccaneers was the only out of area team to win in last year’s event and return a senior led team.  They are led by point guard Vincent Williams and Tray Flyod in the backcourt and senior Ed Stinson is a double double player.

 

Orlando Jones

 

The Tigers may be the hottest team heading into the event with a record of 13-0.  They are led by senior prospects Jonathan Thompson, Reginald Hollinger and sophomore Angelo Warner.  The Tigers are led in the frontcourt by Senior Stacey Robinson and Sophomore Robert Borders.

 

Orlando Evans

 

The Trojans are a 2008 6A state semifinalist team and has enough talent to make another run.  They are led by senior guard Kevin Harden, Koral Harris and Junior Mike Grinage.
