FP Game of the Week Preview

Sep 3, 2009

By: Antonio Jacobs

So Daytona Beach Mainland Buccaneers  you have finally made the much anticipated move to become a Class 6A football program. Johnny tell them what they’ve won. A season opener against a Miami Central Rockets  team powered by the most explosive quarterback in the state (better known as Jeffrey Godfrey) who just so happens to be flanked by some of the best skilled position players in Dade County. How do the Buccaneers feel about this clash of the Titans? Well, they’re pretty confident that they will produce a favorable outcome.

While to most programs this may seem like a daunting task, this Mainland program has embraced the challenge as an opportunity to show to the state that their talent level is equal or better than that of anyone in the State of Florida. One thing is for sure, we will find out on Friday night how good that Daytona Beach bred talent really is.

The reason being is that Miami Central boasts one of the biggest, fastest and most athletic teams in the state. Godfrey is the catalyst on offense but when you are able to hand the ball off to Brandon Gainer or pass the ball to Joshua Reese and Charles Gaines Jr. you tend to make the game look simple. To be frank, Central is loaded and ready to explode in 2010.  But if you think this will be a cake walk you are sadly mistaking.

Tale of the Tape: These two teams are loaded with division one prospects. As with most games between teams with similar talent levels, the game will be decided in the trenches. If there is a weakness on this Miami Central team it looks to be the defense: although, the linebackers lead by Derrick Dansby look to be solid.

The key to this game, in my opinion, will be can Mike Kilgore and the vaunted Mainland offensive line create enough running room for the Buccaneers work horse (Marlon Lane) to move the ball effectively. If Mainland can accomplish this they will be able to keep Central grounded limiting their opportunities and allowing Mainland’s opportunistic defense to take over the game before Godfrey gets into a rhythm. But, if they cannot sustain time consuming drives and put playmakers like O.J. Ross in position to make enough plays to win the game expect the Rockets to score points. Nowhere near the 46 they put on Ely last week, but enough to force the Buccaneers into a shootout which is the Rocket’s specialty. This should be an epic battle with enough big hits and big plays to live up to its enormous pre-game billing.

Prediction

Although the game is in Daytona, the Bucs will fall just short.

Miami Central 30 Daytona Beach Mainland 28
