Last year Jacksonville Robert E. Lee High School continued to show improvement as they finished the season 7-3 and earned a return trip to the playoffs. Unfortunately the trip ended sooner than they wanted to as they fell to Jacksonville Andrew Jackson in the first round. With key returning starters returning, the Generals are hoping to improve on last year’s performance and go deeper into the playoffs. Leading the charge for the Generals will be linebacker Alonzo McQueen.

The Boys Basketball class of 2006 has gotten off to a great start with prospects committing to play for major Division One Schools. The class already have five players committed to play in the Atlantic Coast Conference and also have players committed to play in the SEC and Big East Conference. One of the top players for the class of 2006 in the state of Florida who has committed to play in the Atlantic Coast Conference will be Shooting Guard Aaron Holmes.

Two years ago, no one cared about Miami Norland basketball. The Vikings had just come off of a 10-11 season and wasn’t expected to do much better. In one year, the Vikings not only turned their program around, they established themselves as a state power going 24-5 and reaching the regional finals. One major reason for the resurgence of Norland’s basketball program was the play of All Florida Prospects Player Zachary Peacock.

When you start to evaluate some of the top teams in the state of Florida, Miami Booker T. Washington High school will be at the top of most lists. Last year, Washington finished with a 12-1 record and came within a point of playing for the 4A state crown. With the majority of their team returning, the Tornadoes are hungry and poised to win a state title. One player who will help lead the charge for a title will be defensive lineman Joseph Jackson.

During this span, the Saints have gone from a middle of the road team to one of the better teams in the city of Jacksonville. While the Saints lost All Florida Prospects Running Back Maurice Wells (Ohio State) and All State Linebacker Marvin Sapp (South Carolina) to graduation, they return a solid nucleus that is ready to make a run for a state title. Leading the charge for the Saints this year will be super athlete Jamar Hornsby.

This year, the Tigers are loaded again with a number of prospects that will be recruited to play college football. Leading the way will be WR Jamal Harvey.

Last year Jacksonville Arlington Country Day easily dismantled every school in the state in route to winning the class 2A state championship team. That team featured top 2005 players like David Huertas (Florida), Sammy Hernandez (George Mason) and Brian Hoff. It’s no surprise that the class 2A player came from the school. What may surprise some is that it wasn’t Huertas, Hernandez or Hoff, but it was junior guard Josue Soto taking home the honor as the best player in Class 2A.

The camp brings some of the premier players of the state and evaluates them based on speed, power and agility. The highlight of the event is when the players battle against each other in individual skills. This event usually separates the good players from the great players. One player who established himself as one of the best players at his position is Tampa Jefferson offensive lineman Deron Rose.

The problem is that many of the players are often overlooked unless they are play for a top contending school in the state. While the panhandle had somewhat of a down year for high school basketball this year, the quality of players did not decrease.
