Clermont East Ridge star Chris Bishop isn’t your ideal imagine of a forward. He stands at only 6’5 and weighs just over 200lbs. He doesn’t care if he lays the ball up or throws it down with a thunderous dunk as long as it goes in the hoop. What he does have in common with most of the great players is his desire to get the ball and help his team win at all cost.

With the year over, Florida Prospects presents its second installment of the season review for boys basketball. In this installment, we break down the different classes and give an early look to 2006.

The state of Florida has always been blessed with special playmakers. The type of players that can take a simple five yard passed and take it in for a touchdown. The type of player that can not only make a defender miss a tackle, but make the defender look bad at the same time. One such playmaker that will be giving defenders nightmares this year is Jacksonville First Coast Wide Receiver Alex Rose.

In November Florida Prospects release its five Key Questions for the 2004-2005 season that will shape the season. Today, we revisit the key questions with answers!!!

In recent years Colleges has started to take a liken to the bigger wide receiver. Last year, the top three receivers in the class of 2005 Fred Rouse, Michael Moore, and Louis Murphy all stood over 6’2. This year the state will continue its recent trend and produce many wide receivers 6’2 and above. Leading the way will be East Ridge Wide Receiver Richard Jackson.

In 2004, St. Augustine High School surprised many teams in North Florida by going 12-1. The Yellow Jackets made it all the way to the Regional Finals before losing to the eventual state champions Jacksonville Bolles. The Yellow Jackets will once again be a factor in 3A as they return with the bulk of their team from last year. One of the players that will be leading the way for the Jackets is running back Brandon James.

After finishing with a disappointing 2-8 record, Orlando Jones High School football team is looking to have a big season. With a new coach and attitude the Tigers hope to turn around their misfortunes and contend not only for the district title but for state honors as well. One Tiger who is hoping to help his team have a rebound season will be Wide Receiver, Jarvis Williams.

The emergence of Florida as a basketball state can be contributed to one major factor. AAU basketball! With kids playing AAU ball throughout the nation, many of Florida kids who would never get noticed are starting to receive scholarship offers to many Division One schools. Over the next month, Florida Prospects will be featuring some of Florida’s AAU teams in the state. Today we start with Team IN THE ZONE.

Each year the state of Florida is home to some of the best running backs in the nation. Colleges travel from everywhere just to have a chance at recruiting some of the best players in the state. This past year, the state had nationally ranked running backs such as: Antoine Smith (Pahokee), Maurice Wells (Jacksonville Sandalwood), Roy Upchurch (Tallahassee Godby) and Conredge Collins (Miami Pace). The class of 2006 will be no exception as the state will continue to produce great running backs. Leading the way for the 2006 class will be C.J. Spiller of Union County.

When Cruz Daniels first arrived at Clearwater, he was expected to be a superstar on the offensive end. Standing at 6’10, he towered over all of his teammates. Touted as the next big star from the Clearwater area, Daniels focused most of his attention on the defensive side of the ball. His hard work paid off as he is our choice for Florida Prospects Defensive Player of the Year.

After losing to Eustis in the first round of last year's playoff's, Walter Hodge dedicated his summer to leaving a better legacy for himself at Florida Air Academy. With a perfect record and a state championship under his belt, it is safe to say that his legacy will be a good one at Florida Air Academy.

Bring on Jacksonville Raines. That’s what the coaches and players of Orlando Jones were saying as they came from behind to defeat Jacksonville Jackson 66-58 in the regional semifinal game.

The class of 2005 could easily be classified as the year of the “defensive backs” in the state of Florida. With several top players receiving major division one scholarship offers, it was easily the most sought after position in the state. Although the state will not have the quantity of top defensive backs like the 2005 class, the state will still be well represented with several top players. Leading the way will be Donsay Hardeman of Jacksonville Raines.

The popularity of Girls Basketball has grown tremendously over the past five years. In the state of Florida, the sport has gone from an after thought to a main attraction. After getting off to a sluggish start, the Orlando Jones High Tigers led by Juniors, Calvin Liptrot and Jarvis Williams, handily defeated ninth ranked Port Atlantic Sharks 72-50 in the opening round of the 4A playoffs.

With the 2005 basketball season halfway over, Florida Prospects would like to showcase how some of the players in the class of 2004 are fairing in their collegiate careers.

Each year many websites and recruiting guru’s provide a ranking as who they feel is the best players across the state and nation. Most of the top players are then either recruited to attend a particular college or even make the big leap into the NBA after high school. While all college coaches love the superstars, they spend day and night looking for the hidden gems that can come in and help their programs. One player who looks to become one of the hidden gems for the class of 2005 is Fort Walton Beach G/F Jeremy Payne.

Jacksonville Raines is enjoying the best basketball play in its school’s history. Last year, the Vikings went 30-2 en route to winning their second consecutive state title. This year, the Vikings are off to another great start with an 11-2 record and are currently ranked number one on the Florida Prospects Super 15 State Poll. While most people talk about Vikings superstar Derwin Kitchen, it may be the Vikings other superstar, Juwann James, who may be the key to Vikings three peat goal.

This past weekend RJM Sports & Events, Inc. presented the 5th Annual Martin Luther King Classic that paired some of the top teams in the state against one another in a two day contest. The event included five teams in the Florida Prospects Top 15 overall state poll. With an abundance of college scouts and top players from the 2005 class through 2007, the event was a must see for any basketball fan. The following is an overview of the two days.

December 27 through December 29, Ocala Forest High School hosted the Don Kelso State Farm Girls basketball tournament which featured some of the top talent throughout the state.
