Pahokee Is King of the Muck

Martavious Odoms remembers the play like it was yesterday. Two years ago while playing in his first Muck Bowl as a freshman, Odoms dropped the winning touchdown pass on the last play for Pahokee causing them to lose the game. Two years has passed since then and nothing soothes the pain than sweet revenge for Odoms and Pahokee as they defeated Belle Glades Central 28-21 to win the annual Muck Bowl in front of over 5,000 screaming.

The game which featured more than 25 Division One players had everyone in the stadium on their feet from beginning to end with big plays by both teams and hard hitting action that makes this game so special.

On the game first play, Glades Central quarterback DeAndre Holley hit Deonte Thompson for a 82 yard touchdown pass to give the Raiders an early 7-0 lead.

It didn’t take Pahokee long to answer as they marched down the field and scored on an eight yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Anthony Sheppard.

Pahokee took the lead when Martavious Odoms took reverse and scampered 55-yards for a touchdown putting Pahokee on top 13-7.

“We have run that play a couple of times this year but that was the first time that we scored on it. I knew I had a chance by the way they were lined up and once I saw that I had the corner, I knew no one was going to catch me.” Odoms said.

After stopping Glades Central on their next possession, Pahokee marched downed the field and took a commanding 21-7 lead when sophomore running back Vincent Smith, who led all rushers with 138 yards, scored on a eight yard touchdown run.

Glades didn’t lie down. With less than four minutes remaining in the half, the Raiders marched down the field and closed the gap to 21-14 when Holley found Tarus McKinley in the end zone on fourth down with 13 seconds left in the first half.

The second half, Glades took the ball and pounded their way down the field with a punishing 10 play 52 yard drive culminating with a four yard touchdown run by Antonio McCloude.

The game was tied going into the fourth quarter until Pahokee senior Willie Jenkins bust through the middle for an eight yard touchdown run with nine minutes left to go in the game.

Central had its chances in the quarter to tie the game. Their first opportunity came when Holley hit Travis Benjamin for a 58 yard touchdown pass. Unfortunately for the Raiders, that play was nullified by an offensive pass interference call.

The Raiders final opportunity came when they marched the ball downed to the Pahokee eight yard line. On their next play, the center snapped the ball over Holley head and the ball was recovered by the Blue Devils at the eleven yard line.

Both Pahokee and Glades Central are considered favorites to win the state championship in their perspective classification but their can only be one champion of the Muck and this year it’s the Pahokee Blue Devils.
