After having their record winning streak snapped at home last year by the Kissimmee Osceola Kowboys, the Lakeland Dreadnaughts came into Friday’s night game with extra incentive. Yes the district championship was on the line, but this game was more about the district, it was about pride and bragging rights.

After enduring a 12-13 season last year, the Orlando Dr. Phillips Lady Panthers made a change at head coach bringing in long time assistant boys basketball coach Anthony Jones to lead the team. After one week of practice, all of the ladies are in one accord when they say this is your last year Panthers team.

With the AAU season on hold for the first weekend in June, Jacksonville played host to some of the top players in the state of Florida at the Reebok Headliner Event.

The boys basketball class of 2009 is filled with talented combo guards from across the state that can light up the scoreboard on any given game. While combo guards are a premium in the state, guards that are floor generals are not. One guard who is starting to get noticed for his complete floor game is Vincent Williams from South Dade High School.

After going 5-5 during the 2006 football season, Boca Ciega had a huge turn around in their football program last year. Last season, the Pirates finished 8-2 and returned to the state playoffs. One of the biggest reasons for their turn around was the play of defensive lineman Julius Forte.

After transferring from Miami Coral Reef to Miami Gulliver Prep for his junior year, linebacker Frankie Telfort was ready for a big junior campaign. Unfortunately for Telfort, he tore a ligament in his hand before the season started causing him to miss the first five games of the season. Now with a clean bill of health, Telfort is ready to take on the state.

Pahokee running back Vincent Smith isn’t use to losing. With his team riding the waves of a 28 game winning streak with very little opposition, Smith has seen the best of times in his football career.

Orlando Olympia junior guard Dexter Fields knows all about pressure and expectations. Every time his team plays, all eyes are on him. Playing on a team that is expected to not only contend for a state title but win one. After a disappointing end to his junior campaign, Fields is more determine to live up to the expectations of himself.

After a slow start in the recruiting process, South Dade Wide Receiver Dontravious Floyd has started to pick up steam. With his great combination of size and agility, Floyd has quickly become one of the more sought after wide receiver prospects in the South Florida area.
