The Road to Lakeland “Final Four” continues with four more classifications set to crown their champions today for the 2013 season. Classes 5A, 6A, 7A and 8A will determine their state champion starting at 10am, 1:30pm, 5:00 and 8:30pm respectively. The 2012-13 Girls Basketball season is entering its final day and should provide us with more exciting girls basketball before the AAU season starts, which is next month. Enjoy today’s games and continue to support Girls Basketball.

State Championship Previews

The Road to Lakeland “Final Four” continues with three of eight classifications set to square off today starting with both 1A semifinal games. The first semifinal game begins at 10am followed by the second 1A semifinal game at 11:30am. Then the third game of the afternoon begins with a pair of 2A semifinal match-ups starting at 2:30pm and followed by a 4:00pm tip-off time, which will be the fourth contest of the day. The night cap features two 4A semifinal match-ups, which kicks offs at 7:00pm and 8:30pm respectively.

This was a Knight to remember for Pine Crest Panthers, as they defeated the American Heritage Patriots 74-72, in an early district 14-3A match-up. Brandon Knight (Pine Crest) scored the game high 35 points, 9 assists and Kenny Boynton, Jr. (American Heritage) finished with 32 points in Round 1.

The Second Annual Fun In The Sun Tournament concluded with a Team Breakdown victory over Hollywood Eagles in the title game. Team Breakdown was led by Sandra Garcia (American Heritage H.S.) with 14 points and Aerial Wilson (Rockledge H.S.) with 11 points to secure a 47-46 win over the Eagles.

This Memorial Weekend marks the 2nd Annual Elite AAU Tournament in the state of Florida, THE FUN IN THE SUN TOURNAMENT. This tournament features three of the top elite AAU teams in Florida. Teams such as Hollywood Eagles, Team Essence, and Team Breakdown are considered the main attractors of the tournament, which should make a great basketball weekend.

Throughout the entire 2007-2008 girls basketball season, Pensacola High Tigers was considered one of the best teams in the state. Led by guard sensation, Bianca Lutley, 5’10” junior, the Tigers were flawless until the final game of the season before losing to Orlando Bishop Moore in the Class 4A State Title game.

THE FINALE: ONE GAME SEASON

At the beginning of the season, there are two goals: To play the first and to play the last game of the season. There are teams that have their season come to an abrupt ending without any signs of warning. The other teams end their season, by playing in the last game possible, for a chance to be called the BEST. In Lakeland, there were 12 teams controlling their own destiny by playing in the last game and knowing that this is the last game. The winners will be the State’s six best teams in 2008.
Third Annual MLK Dream Classic

The Florida Prospects’ 3rd Annual MLK Dream Classic was held on Saturday, January 12, 2008 at Jones High School in Orlando. This event featured top quality teams such as IMG Academy (Bradenton), Norland (Miami), Olympia (Orlando), Atlantic (Port Orange), Evans (Orlando) and Jones (Orlando).
Brett Gets His Chance to Lead the Hawks

For the past four years, Lake Howell has been one of the best basketball teams in the state. During that period, the Silver Hawks has been led by three of the top players at their position, Joey Rodriguez, Chandler Parsons and Nick Calathes. The trio led the Silver Hawks to four consecutive final fours and a state championship last year. With the trio gone, Silver Hawks fans will look to guard Brett Chance, the long returning starter off of last year’s team to lead the team back to the finals.
Hills Stops Bad Weather and the Tigers

On a cloudy, muggy and wet night, September 1, 2006 marked the beginning of a rivalry between two cities on different ends of Broward County. Hollywood and Pompano Beach were both represented by two good quality high school football teams, Hills and Blanche Ely, respectively. Blanche Ely Tigers (1-1) ranked 10th and Hollywood Hills Spartans (2-0) ranked 4th in the state. This was round 3 of a fight filled with agony, tears and passion from both squads putting their mark as one of the best in the state.

Shortly after losing to Palm Beach Dwyer in the state semifinals in the 2004-2005 season, Lake Howell guard Nick Calathes made a decision. He had just put up over 30 points against one of the best players in the state and on the state biggest platform he proved that he was one of the best players in the state as a sophomore. His play in Lakeland was just the beginning of what would be a magnificent junior season ending with him being chose as this year’s Florida Prospects Boys Basketball Player of the Year.
